Toolox 44 - Quenched and tempered up to 419 BHN (45HRC)
Back to Steel OverviewGround Flat Stock and $mart Flat Stock comes always in a machined condition, that means:
NO decaburization on the surfaces (decarburization leads to unreliable components and tools)
Less dirt on your machines during further processing – nothing but clean chips
Stress-relieved flat steel avoids warping of components during further machining
Get the close-to-finish-size thickness and width you need for the components you plan

TOOLOX 44 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Toolox 44 comes with a lot of plus points like the very low residual stresses, high impact toughness and fatigue resistance. Due to its low carbon and alloy content, this tool steel material is suitable for both welding and thermal-cutting. With the ability to nitrate this material the surface hardness can be additionally increased and service life extended.
The combination of those characteristics makes Toolox 44 suitable for demanding engineering and is especially suited for plastic molds as it has excellent polishing and photo-etching properties due to the cleanliness of the material.
No, Toolox 44 is not a stainless steel.
Toolox 44 is not a corrosion resistant steel. To be classified as a corrosion resistant steel it has to have a mass fraction of 10.5% of chrome. The Toolox 44 has a mass fraction of approx. 1.35%.
As a ferrous based material the Toolox 44 is magnetizable.
Toolox 44 has a wear resistance of 4 on a scale where 1 is low and 6 is high.
With the combination of high strength, fatigue resistance and toughness, Toolox is used in cold work for forming, bending, and drawing but also finds its uses in components like guide plates, support plates and staple holder plates.
TOOLOX 44 TECHNICAL PROPERTIES
Toolox 44 has good wear resistance which lets this material hold an edge, it has good toughness preventing chipping and breaking under stress and has been produced to have good dimensional stability which is vital in maintaining precise tolerances during machining but though it has some corrosion resistance it does not have enough to be used in corrosive environments.
Toolox 44 has a tensile strength of approx. 205.9 KSI on delivery (0.145 KSI = 1MPa). In order to reach this value, a tensile test is performed to show how much force is needed to stretch or elongate a sample before it breaks.
The yield strength shows how much stress can be applied to a material before it plastically deforms. Beyond that point the material will not return to its original form if the stresses are taken away but will stay deformed or even break.
The yield strength for Toolox 44 is 189 KSI (1300 MPa).
The heat conductivity for Toolox 44 is at 28.0 W/(m*K) (194 BTU/(h-ft*°F)) at room temperature.
Heat conductivity table | |
Value | By temperature |
28.0 | 68°F |
32.0 | 392°F |
29.0 | 752°F |
21.0 | 1112°F |
The thermal expansion coefficient shows how much Toolox 44 might expand or contract when the temperature is changed. This is very important information, especially when working with high temperatures, or where there are strong temperature changes during applications. The thermal expansion coefficient is typically in the region of approx. 13.5 10-6m/(m*K) at room temperature.

TOOLOX 44 PROCEDURE
Further heat treatment for this steel grade is not intended as it comes in a quenched and tempered condition.
Any further heat treatment of this steel grade has to be considered very well to preserve the given properties of this grade by the manufacturer. To preserve those properties one has to have a detailed understanding of the metallurgy of the Toolox 44 and how the heating process may change its properties.
Induction hardening, as well as with the other surface hardening processes, will increase the surface properties further. Induction hardening is a very common method to increase the surface hardness with a relatively large thickness.
Laser hardening has the added advantage of a very smooth surface which reduces friction and the risk of material sticking to the surface. To increase the surface hardness while laser hardening the material, a carbon powder is put on the surface.
Toolox is tempered (delivery condition) at 1094°F (590°C), this removes all residual stresses and allows excellent precision when machining.
TOOLOX 44 SURFACE TREATMENT
For applications needing better surface properties, Toolox 44 can be induction or laser hardened and nitrited. This gives Toolox 44 a high surface hardness with a very resistant core, increased fatigue resistance and therefore a longer service life.
Note: Any surface treatment should not exceed the temperature of 1094°F (590°C).
Nitriding Toolox 44, can reach a surface hardness of 572 - 711 HBN (58 - 65 HRC), is used when high wear resistance is needed for a longer service life. If PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating, the nitrided surface, an even higher surface hardness as well as a corrosion resistance can be reached. Toolox 44 can reach a surface hardening of 800 HV with this procedure and a hardening depth of 1/64 to 5/64 inches (0.2 to 2mm).
TOOLOX 44 PROCESSING
Toolox 44 is easy to machine and has a very good dimensional stability.
Selecting the correct process, finishing requirements, power input as well as electrodes and dielectric fluid is important for any steel. As Toolox 44 is produced to have certain properties, it is very important to ensure that the process is planned and controlled to maintain the intrinsic properties and to meet the specifications of the intended application.
Toolox 44 is made for dimensional stability after machining but may still experience dimensional changes when for example welding due to rapid heat changes.
Toolox 44 can be welded by all conventional methods and can be joined to any other kinds of weldable steels. Before welding the base metal should be cleaned from contaminants such as grease, rust, oil and moisture and sharp edges removed. Consumables suitable for Toolox are stainless, unalloyed, and low-alloyed consumables.
